I've been spending most of the afternoon/evening attempting to fix a friend's computer. DVD's play, but with no audio. Googling shows that lots of people have this problem after installing Nero, which someone apparently did on this computer, but apparently no Microsoft solutions exist. People invariably suggest installing codecs of dubious quality from some third-party website, or VLC, which is open-source and the solution I chose. This after downloading 50MB of updates from Microsoft, plus the Windows Media Player 11 which I fetched last week and burned to CD. Installing all that shit served no purpose, the sound was still missing on the DVDs. The troubleshooter was likewise worthless. Thanks, Bill, for wasting my fucking afternoon, ya shithead.
