finally got my modified AmericanCoin sources to build against my older Boost libs by installing g++-4.8 and using $ make CXX=g++-4.8 BOOST_INCLUDE_PATH=~/include BOOST_LIB_PATH=~/lib -f makefile.unix.
now to see if it'll actually run...
