jc blog - tales of a modern-day nomadic hunter-gatherer

Follow jcomeau_ictx on Twitter This is the weblog of Intrepid Wanderer. You never know what you might find here; graphic descriptions of bodily functions, computer programming secrets, proselytizing for the antichrist, miscellaneous ranting and kvetching, valuable information on living off the land... if you don't share my rather weird interests you may want to try slashdot instead.

You can consider my Del.icio.us links an extension to my blog, as are my LifeTango goals and my other to-do items. My to-buy list is also public, but only for sharing any useful ideas that might be there; I'm not requesting charity, neither do I offer it.

You can find me easily in google searches, as jcomeau, jcomeau_ictx, or jcomeauictx. There are lots of other jcomeaus, but AFAIK I'm the only jcomeau_ictx out there so far.

If you want to comment on anything you see here, try the new Facebook comments, reachable by clicking the "[comment]" link at the end of each post. If for some reason that isn't working, go ahead and email me, jc.unternet.net. You know what to do with the first dot. Make the 'subject' line something reasonably intelligent-looking or it goes plunk! into the spambasket unread.

This RSS feed may or may not work. Haven't fiddled with it in forever. RSS Feed

headache is almost gone, throat is no longer sore, congestion is minimal. but I've had sporadic coughing fits since last night.

drinking a mixture of ginger, lime juice, garlic, and hot pepper in hot water. [comment]

that virus or whatever it was hit me like a ton of bricks. had gone to bed early last night, and by the time I woke up at midnight it had extended from my throat into my sinuses. couldn't breathe through my nose for the next few hours and I don't believe I got much if any sleep until suddenly I could nosebreathe again around 0500. but my whole mouth hurts for some reason?!

ate a small, raw clove of garlic last night on a friend's suggestion. don't know if it helped or not, but at least I didn't gag as I usually do. sucked on it for a while first, but out of habit I finally chewed and swallowed. now for some yogurt and maybe some coffee. [comment]

awoke around 0400 local time with a sore throat, a sure sign of a cold. had no yogurt, so wasn't able to do anything about it until later this morning. now time for a siesta. [comment]

in the process of trying to identify a weed today, I finally discovered the name of what is probably the ugliest of northern California roadside plants, bristly oxtongue. but it can kill parasites! [comment]

I always underestimate the difficulty in porting sequential Python code to event-driven JavaScript. the 2 paradigms really are irreconicilable. [comment]

Megabus just sent out an email saying that booking is now available through September. until now, booking has been at most 3 months out. I hope this is a sign that they're doing well and will keep expanding their coverage. I have no idea how Grayhound can be hanging on when they treat their passengers like unruly children and Megabus treats us like responsible adults. [comment]

realized in the last few days why Isla Ballena, the little island west of Isla Espiritu Santo, is missing in my panoramas. it's because there's no data (red pixels) for the whole damned thing.

porting the Python code to JavaScript is proving difficult. so I'm punting and still putting a lot of it in Python, served locally using Python's built-in http.server module. [comment]

tonight I googled 2011 movies, and found Source Code, and watched it. the perfect antidote to Donnie Darko. I can't believe I missed all these incredible movies! maybe I was in another corner of the multiverse. [comment]

just watched Hunger Games on putlocker. couldn't figure out the keyboard shortcut for maximizing the video, but did find the digits shortcut; 0 brings you back to the beginning, necessary when attempting to click the maximize arrows takes you to the end of the movie, which seems to happen almost every time lately.

catching up on my pop culture education, sorely lacking since around 1977. I've probably got something like 1000 movies to go before I'm hip to the jive. odds are I'll die before I make it... [comment]

finally got around to testing something I thought was possible but never bothered to check before: python/javascript apps on the Android termux app. it works. simply python -m http.server --cgi and point your browser to your Python CGI script at localhost:8000. all the backend stuff in Python3 and the frontend in JavaScript, executed by the browser. I woke up a little while ago and started thinking about a way to suck a vacuum on the whole house if a fly got in. the little bastard can't fly, and even if you don't bother to chase him he probably can't hold his breath as long as you or I can before he dies.

that's totally impractical, but it got to ideas about spacesuits and testing them out, while breathing through a tube connected to the outside. then through a tube connected to another enclosed area where plants are growing, producing the oxygen. this way I can practice living on the moon long before I have the means to get there.

I'll have to send up a few rockets full of supplies before I go. I have to land them on the "dark side" to keep my promise to Charles Cameron, so will need a reflector to bounce off communications. I wonder if I could use what the Chinese put in place, or if they're using an encrypted router instead of a mirror?

so many questions. I could and probably should go back to sleep now, because it's only 2:35 local time, but don't think I can. maybe I can get some programming done. sure haven't been able to the last few days, for whatever reason. [comment]

thigh and leg (muslo y pierna) quarters were on sale at Chedraui today for about 18 pesos per kilo, less than a dollar a pound. I got one for 10 pesos and change, so about 55 cents, and cooked it with rice for dinner tonight, thinking I'd have plenty of meat left over for chicken fried rice tomorrow.

nope. I dug into that chicken like a starving man, like DiCaprio's character in The Revenant. I get by with just a few grams of meat most days, but that craving catches up with me. [comment]
