jc blog - tales of a modern-day nomadic hunter-gatherer

Follow jcomeau_ictx on Twitter This is the weblog of Intrepid Wanderer. You never know what you might find here; graphic descriptions of bodily functions, computer programming secrets, proselytizing for the antichrist, miscellaneous ranting and kvetching, valuable information on living off the land... if you don't share my rather weird interests you may want to try slashdot instead.

You can consider my Del.icio.us links an extension to my blog, as are my LifeTango goals and my other to-do items. My to-buy list is also public, but only for sharing any useful ideas that might be there; I'm not requesting charity, neither do I offer it.

You can find me easily in google searches, as jcomeau, jcomeau_ictx, or jcomeauictx. There are lots of other jcomeaus, but AFAIK I'm the only jcomeau_ictx out there so far.

If you want to comment on anything you see here, try the new Facebook comments, reachable by clicking the "[comment]" link at the end of each post. If for some reason that isn't working, go ahead and email me, jc.unternet.net. You know what to do with the first dot. Make the 'subject' line something reasonably intelligent-looking or it goes plunk! into the spambasket unread.

This RSS feed may or may not work. Haven't fiddled with it in forever. RSS Feed

Over the last 3 days, my sense of smell has almost completely recovered. "Stink" was one of the last to come back. A blessing in some ways, but if you want to be around other people, it is necessary to know.

The progression of the disease, as I recall:

First 24 hours, beginning December 17 at about 2200 local (Mexico Pacific) time: itchy throat, having to swallow a lot more phlegm than usual.

Second 24 hours: loss of smell and taste; throat better, now headache, mostly from right side of forehead down to teeth. Also, bad congestion.

At about 10PM Sunday night, at the 48 mark, I took the first 4 Ivermectin tablets, 24 grams total.

3rd 24 hours: intermittent nonproductive cough; congestion sometimes easing up; sneezing occasionally; intermittent headaches, not as bad as 2nd day.

Took another 24 grams of Ivermectin that night.

Final 12 hours, ending 10 AM Tuesday: very light, intermittent headaches; congestion improved; smell and taste starting to reappear; coughing less frequently.

From my post on Facebook.

After that first 84 hours, I felt back to my normal self, but still had to blow my nose occasionally for the next couple (?) of days. [comment]

After years of attempting to take sunrise and sunset photos with Android phones, and mostly getting washed-out colors nothing like what I was seeing with my eyes, I finally stumbled on an answer this morning.

I touched the screen at the brightest point in the Eastern sky. Instantly it adjusted the "dynamic range" (audio term, I can't recall the video equivalent) and darkens the foreground, and the sky was represented faithfully in the photo. This worked on Android 10. I don't yet know whether the Android 6 phone has the same functionality. [comment]

Throat feeling weird again. Hope I'm not going to have another round of this. [comment]

Remembered I had an ice cream cone, Choco-Brownie, at Thrifty on Tuesday night after dinner at Hambrusia. That's more likely what weakened my immune system than the beer, and that was almost exactly 72 hours before the sore throat. [comment]

Thursday evening I drank too much beer: 2 ballenas, plus the 12-ounce Tecate I drank with breakfast/lunch at McFisher. This morning (Friday) I woke up with the usual bowel problems and excess mucus production that are typical after such abuse. But I tried to sleep early, a little after 8 PM, and I couldn't. My throat is starting to bother me. It's almost 10 PM local time now. I may have caught something. [comment]

Last night I lay awake for two hours or more thinking I should write a book, A Layman's Introduction to the Calculus, just solely from memory without referencing any other work. And I might.

I also had a dream, just before awakening, that those exercises I've been doing in the fitness parks around town absolutely swelled the muscles in my arms and shoulders. Wouldn't that be nice. [comment]
